Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) serves as Bangalore's primary international airport. Located in Devanahalli, North Bangalore, the airport covers an expansive 4,000 acres and opened in 2008. It consists of two terminals and is approximately 35 km from Devanahalli. The airport is named after King Kempegowda I, the founder of Bangalore, and is managed by a public-private consortium. With a yearly footfall of about 37.5 million passengers, it is renowned for being the first solar-powered airport in India and one of the most beautiful airports in the world. Its coordinates are 13°11′56″N and 077°42′20″E, and it can be easily found on Google Maps.
Kempegowda International Airport (KIAB) caters to both domestic and international flights, making it a key hub for airlines such as Indigo, Air India, and Vistara. The airport continues to expand and plays an essential role in connecting Bangalore to the rest of the world.
KIAB is operated and managed by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), a public-private partnership that ensures smooth operations. The ownership of the airport is divided as follows:
KIAB has two terminals: Terminal 1 (T1) for domestic flights and Terminal 2 (T2) for international flights.
Terminal 1 (T1) is the dedicated domestic terminal, covering an area of 150,556 m². It has the capacity to handle up to 20 million passengers annually. The terminal features two lounges, providing a comfortable space for travelers to relax. These lounges also highlight local art and culture, adding a unique touch to the travel experience. Additionally, there is an exclusive VIP lounge, which spans 930 m², offering a more private and luxurious space for high-end travelers.
Since September 12, 2023, Terminal 1 (T1) at Kempegowda International Airport (KIAB) now exclusively handles domestic flights. Airlines such as IndiGo, Akasa Air, Alliance Air, and SpiceJet operate from this terminal. All international flights have been moved to Terminal 2.
Terminal 2 (T2) at KIAB was inaugurated on November 11, 2022, by Prime Minister Modi and officially began operations in January 2023. The terminal was built at a cost of around Rs 5,000 crore and covers an area of 255,000 sq.m. It boosts the airport’s capacity by 25 million passengers annually. Additionally, there are plans for a second phase, expected to increase the capacity by another 20 million passengers per year. T2 began handling domestic flights on January 15, 2023, and as of September 12, 2023, it now manages all international flights.
Kempegowda International Airport has rapidly become the third-busiest airport in India and ranks 25th in Asia. As of 2023-24, it holds the 56th position globally in terms of passenger traffic.
